The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot 297 (+9) as a group on Sunday to finish the first round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge in eighth place in a tightly-packed field.
The Wildcats will enter second-round play on Monday just eight strokes off the lead held by Houston. Inclement weather in Iowa impacted the playing conditions on Sunday, forcing play to be suspended for half an hour during the morning action.
“I was very proud of the way our team handled the difficult conditions today,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “Scoring was difficult in the wind and rain, but our guys hung in there and made birdies to take back some momentum. If we can get the back end of the lineup playing like our front half, we’ll really be able to compete this week.”
Junior Alex McMahon fired a 71 (-1) on Sunday, his first round of the year in red numbers, to finish the day in a tie for third place. He rolled in an eagle putt on the par-five 10th hole to propel him to one of just nine sub-par rounds on the day.
Senior Erik Oja played Spirit Hollow at level par 72 on Sunday to finish the day with a share of 11th place, while freshman Bertrand Mommaerts shot a two-over 74 to enter into a 28th-place tie. Senior Christian Colegrove and junior Brenden Redfern shot 80 (+8) and 86 (+14) to wrap up the day in 64th and 75th place, respectively.
“I’m particularly proud of Alex for getting his first round of the year under par on a difficult day,” Anderson said. “It was also encouraging to watch Bertrand Mommaerts shoot two-under on the back nine after a tough front. Those guys really battled today and did a lot to help our team.”
Mommaerts played a spotless back nine on Sunday, registering two birdies and seven pars down the stretch.Tee times for the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge will start at 7 a.m. MST on Monday.
