TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer dropped its first match of the season to No. 24 Texas Tech, 2-0, in their final match of the Arizona Cats Classic on Sunday. The Wildcats were 1-1 on the weekend with Friday night’s win over Southern Utah, 6-1.

Arizona (4-1-3) was strong on offense out-shooting Texas Tech (7-1), 16-8, with Alexandra Doller leading the team with five shots. Janine Beckie scored both goals for the Red Raiders, one in the third minute of the match and one in the 67th minute.

“Texas Tech is a great team so I have to give them credit,” head coach Tony Amato said.” Our girls came out the way we wanted them to in the sense that they fought, battled and competed with a very good team. I thought we created some great chances and on a great day, they would find the back of the net. That didn’t happen today and we made a few mistakes that led to their goals. We will have to learn from this and march on this week and approach the next game with the same mentality of looking to get the win.”

In the net, Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded one save while Texas Tech goalkeeper Victoria Esson recorded two saves.

In the first match of the day in the Arizona Cats Classic, Arizona State defeated Southern Utah, 4-0, with Cali Farquharson scoring two of the Sun Devil goals. Arizona State finished the Arizona Cats Classic 1-1 and Southern Utah finished with an 0-2 record in the tournament.
