Coaches Announce Weekly Award Winners

TUCSON, Ariz. Each week, Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff will select Player of the Week honorees based on performance leading up to and including the game each week. The Wildcats defeated UTSA, 38-13, Saturday night at Arizona Stadium.

With wins against NAU, UNLV and UTSA, Arizona and Rodriguez open the season 3-0 for the second-consecutive season. Rodriguez is now 7-0 against non-conference opponents at Arizona and the Cats have won 11 of their last 12 non-conference games. With Saturday’s win against the Roadrunners, Rodriguez improved his career record to 131-89-2 as a head coach and he is 11-5 in 16 games at Arizona. The Wildcats have won four-consecutive games dating back to the end of 2012.

Offense: B.J. Denker, Senior, Quarterback

Denker had a career night with 158 passing yards and 90 rushing yards for a total of 248 all-purpose yards. He ran for two scores on the ground and threw for a 13-yard scoring pass to freshman Samajie Grant. His 14 completions (on 21 attempts) was also a career high. On the season, he’s thrown for 326 yards while completing 31 of 55 passing attempts. He has two passing TDs and five rushing scores.

Defense: Jourdon Grandon, Junior, Cornerback

Grandon paced the Arizona defense in holding the UTSA Roadrunners to just 13 points Saturday night, allowing two field goals and one TD. He had a season-high six solo tackles while intercepting one Eric Soza pass and forcing one fumble. His pick was the third of his career and he also collected 16 return yards. On the season, he has nine solos stops with one assisted.

Special Teams: Drew Riggleman, Sophomore, Punter

Riggleman, in his first season as Arizona’s starting punter, was limited in his duty but effective nonetheless. He had four punts for a total of 183 yards and an average of 45.8 yards per kick. Three of his boots pinned the UTSA Roadrunners inside the 20-yard line. On the season, he has nine punts for 359 yards and an average of 39.9 yards per kick. He has connected on three kicks for 50 yards or more.


Junior running back Ka’Deem Carey was named Hard Edge Player of the Week. He collected 128 yards on 27 carries and two rushing TDs in the UTSA game. He also caught two passes for 33 yards and a long of 17.

Junior receiver Austin Hill was named Student of the Week and Jake Smith was given the Community Service Award. Smith is a founding member of Arizona Athletics’ chapter of Uplifting Athletes and is a team leader in Arizona football community service projects.

From the scout team, redshirt freshman quarterback Connor Brewer on offense, freshman safety RJ Morgan on defense and sophomore safety Tyler Grammar on special teams were honored for their efforts during the UTSA game preparations.

After a bye week on Sept. 21, the Wildcats will return to action on Sept. 28 when they visit Washington. Time and television information for the team’s Pac-12 opener will be announced on Monday.
