BURLINGTON, Iowa Alex McMahon and Erik Oja both shot 71 (-1) in second-round action at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday as the Arizona men’s golf team slipped to 10th with one round left to play.

The Wildcats own a total of 595 (+19) after shooting 298 (+10) on Monday. Oklahoma currently leads the 15-team tournament with a total of 586 (-8).

“Today was rough for us from a depth perspective,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “It’s tough to count two rounds in the upper 70s and be successful at this level. That said, our guys fought until the end and if that attitude and effort continues, we’ll have a much better day tomorrow.”

McMahon posted his second red number in as many days, bringing his total to 142 (-2) through 36 holes of play. He will enter tomorrow’s final round in a tie for fifth place, just one stroke off the lead, and will look to make a run at his first collegiate victory.

Oja also broke par on a Monday that was much better for scoring conditions than Sunday’s opening round, firing a 71 (-1) to bring his total to 143 (-1) for the tournament. He is tied for ninth heading into the final round, teaming with McMahon to give Arizona two of the 10 players in the field under par for the tournament.

“I’m proud of Alex and you can see his confidence continue to grow,” Anderson said. “He worked hard this summer and it’s great to see it validated so far. Erik didn’t have his best day off the tee, but he battled all the way, kept it together and posted a good number.”

With 18 holes left to play, Bertrand Mommaerts owns a share of 53rd place with a total of 153 (+9), Christian Colegrove is tied for 66th with a total of 158 (+14) and Brenden Redfern stands in 73rd place with a total of 164 (+20).

Tee times for the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge will start at 6:30 a.m. MST on Tuesday. Live results will continue to be available via For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
