TUCSON, Ariz.Arizona won both its doubles matches on the day to open up the Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. on Friday. The tournament was new assistant coach Arron Spencer’s first with the team.

“Doubles were great,” said Spencer. “The guys took care of business and did what they were supposed to do.”

Junior Carlos Bermudez and sophomore Matt Dunn teamed up to defeat Marco Bensley and Nicklas Wingord of Abilene Christian 8-5, while junior Robin Chou and sophomore Trevor James persevered over Andrew Van Der Vyver and Rodolfo Jauregui of New Mexico 8-7 in an 8-6 tiebreaker.

James, another newcomer making his Wildcat debut, experienced success in both his singles matches. He first took down Francisco Damasio of Western New Mexico 7-5, 6-2 and then went on to win his second round matchup against Fabio Tomasetti of Northern Arizona 6-2, 6-4.

“Trevor did well,” said Spencer. “He played solid and did everything we asked him to do.”

Bermudez also advanced in the tournament, winning the first round 7-5, 6-2 over Justin Pena of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin. In the second round, Bermudez was defeated by New Mexico’s Jauregui 6-3, 6-1.

Chou lost his first round match in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, against Rodrigo Almeida of Western New Mexico, but was able to bounce back to defeat Northern Arizona’s Alexandre Locci in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Dunn lost his first match against New Mexico’s Van Der Vyver 6-3, 6-4, but advanced in the next round in a default due to illness for Abilene Christian’s Wingord.

“Going into tomorrow, we need to do a better job taking care of the lead,” said Spencer. “In almost every match we were up, but we weren’t able to close them out so we’ll focus on keeping our leads tomorrow.”

The Wildcats will look to finish off their matches on Saturday as the tournament continues. In doubles, Bermudez and Dunn will open up against Trevor Unger and Kester Black of Northern Arizona, while James and Chou open against New Mexico State’s Marc Westgate and Liam Goldberg. In singles, Dunn and Chou will face off against each other, with the winner heading into the consolation final. Bermudez is matched up against Guilherme Gesser of Abilene Christian, and James will play New Mexico’s Bryan Cunningham for a spot in the championship.
