TUCSON, Ariz. –Sophomore Trevor James won his third straight singles match of the Aggie Invitational on Saturday, vaulting him into a Sunday finals matchup.
James defeated Bryan Cunningham of New Mexico in straight sets, 6-2, 7-6(6) to earn a spot in the championship for his flight.
Fellow sophomore Matt Dunn also picked up a singles victory, coming over junior teammate Robin Chou. The match was evenly fought and included a 22-point tiebreaker in which Dunn squeaked ahead and eventually won in three, 3-6, 7-6(12-10), 6-3.
“Overall it was a good day,” said assistant coach Arron Spencer. “The guys competed well and improved in certain aspects from yesterday. We still have certain things we need to improve and we will look to work on those tomorrow to finish the weekend on a good note.”
Junior Carlos Bermudez was behind 3-4 in his opening set against Guilherme Gesser of Abilene Christian when he retired.
In doubles, Bermudez and Dunn edged out Trevor Unger and Kester Black of Northern Arizona 8-7(5) in the day’s opening round, but later fell to New Mexico State’s Thomas Douglas and Naveen Manivannan 8-5.
James and Chou dropped their first match to Marc Westgate and Liam Goldberg of New Mexico State, but rebounded in their next match to defeat Francisco Damasio and Alvaro Nunez of Western New Mexico 8-3.
