Wildcats Ready for Oregon

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer will travel to Oregon to take on Oregon State on Fri., Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. and Oregon on Sun., Oct. 13 at noon. The match vs. Oregon State will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.

Last Time Out: In the previous weekend, Arizona (5-4-3) dropped their first Pac-12 road match, 2-1, at No. 2 Stanford Friday night. In the loss, junior Emily Lai scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute of the match to send the game into overtime. On Sunday, the Cats lost a 2-1 decision to California with Ponce recording the solo goal for Arizona. Ifeoma Onomonu and Rachel Mercik recorded the two goals for the Golden Bears. Kaufman recorded a total of eight saves of the 23 shots she faced.


About the Beavers: Last weekend, Oregon State (2-8-2) traveled to Utah and Colorado for their first Pac-12 road matches and picked up two losses. In the 2-1 loss to Colorado, Jenna Richardson recorded the solo goal for the Beavers and recorded five shots, two on goal. In the 1-0 loss to Utah, Richardson and Erin Uchacz led the Beavers in shots with two apiece of the eight shot total in the match. Goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme recorded a total of eight saves on the weekend.

About the Ducks: Last weekend, Oregon (2-6-3) lost their first two Pac-12 road matches to Utah and Colorado. For their first Pac-12 match on the road, Oregon dropped a 1-0 decision to the Utes. In the loss, Kira Wagoner led the team in shots with two and goalkeeper Abby Steele recorded two saves. The Ducks lost a 1-0 decision to Colorado but outshot the Buffs, 15-13, with Lilly Archer and Bri Pugh leading the team with three. Bri Pugh leads the Ducks in shots with 36, 18 on goal.

Wildcats Leading the Pac: Among the Pac-12, Arizona ranks No. 3 in shots (196) and tied with Stanford for second in the goals category (26). The Wildcats are tied with Oregon State for third place in saves with 54. Senior Ponce is in third place in shots with 49. Junior redshirt Kaufman ranks second in the Pac-12 in saves with 53.

New to the Roster: Of the 13 freshmen and one transfer on the 2013 roster, eight newcomers have playing time under their belts. Junior transfer Alexandra Doller ranks two on the Wildcat roster in goals with four. Freshmen Justene Kesterson and Haley Silverberg have both scored goals for the Wildcats. Freshman Lexe Selman has recorded a total of 17 shots, seven on goal. Freshman Jaden DeGracie has a total of 12 shots and five assists.

Stats Among the Cats: Senior Ponce leads the team in shots with 49, including 21 on goal. Junior transfer Alexandra Doller has totaled 24 shots, including 12 on goal. Freshman DeGracie leads the Cats in assist with five with Ponce’s four ranking second on the team. Sophomores Wong and Kaitlyn Lopez both have three goals apiece. Goalkeeper Kaufman has 53 saves with a .803 save average.


Defense Stands Strong: The Wildcat defense has held their 12 opponents scoreless for a total of 857 minutes, including three shutouts against non-conference opponents Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside and No. 24 Ohio State. Four matches have been decided by a single goal (Florida Atlantic, No. 11 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford and California). Kaufman has held three teams scoreless, Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside and No. 24 Ohio State.

Up Next: The Wildcats are back on the road to Oregon to take on Oregon State Fri., Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. and Oregon on Sun., Oct. 13 at noon. The match vs. Oregon State will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
