TUCSON Kelsey Rodriguez’s grand slam, part of her five RBI, paced Arizona as the Cats defeated Phoenix College in its Arizona Fall Invitational opener, 11-0 in five innings Friday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Chelsea Goodacre chipped in four RBI to help Arizona to the mercy victory in front of 1,137 fans, which got their chance to see the new-look Wildcats, who feature 11 newcomers.

UA’s offensive onslaught featured 12 hits in 26 at-bats in the contest, including multi-hit nights from Hallie Wilson, Chelsea Suitos and Mo Mercado.

In the circle, Estela Piñon and Shelby Babcock combined to shutout the Bears in the combined three-hit effort. Piñon struck out five in three innings and allowed two hits while Babcock allowed one baserunner in the final two innings. Babcock fanned three of the seven batters she faced.

UA batted around in the first inning with the help of four free passes from Phoenix pitcher Jackie Aguilar and plated five runs, four of which came off a Kelsey Rodriguez grand slam.

Goodacre picked up RBI numbers two and three on the night when her bases-loaded single plated two runs in the second inning. Freshmen Katiyana Mauga and Mo Mercado plated runs with singles to extend UA's lead to 9-0 after two innings of play.

The Wildcats added to their lead in the third when Goodacre drove in a run by reaching on an error and Kelsey Rodriguez drew a bases-loaded walk, their fourth and firth runs batted in of the game, respectively.
