TUCSON – For the third-straight season, the University of Arizona Wildcat men’s and No. 3 women’s cross country teams will make the trip to Madison, Wisc. The fifth annual Wisconsin adidas Invitational is set for Saturday, Oct. 19. The meet has become one of the nation’s premier cross country competition. The men will run 8,000 meters and the women will run 6,000 meters. The men’s race is set to start at 11 a.m. CDT while the women’s race will begin at 12 p.m. The meet will be held at Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.
Arizona will compete against a loaded field that includes Arizona State (M: 30, W: NR), Arkansas (M: 6, W: 8), Boston College (W: 24), BYU (M: 5, W: 26), Columbia (M: 8, W: NR), Dartmouth (M: 27, W: 13), Duke (W: 17), Florida (M: 26, W: NR), Georgetown (M: 24), Minnesota (M: 22, W: 22), New Mexico (W: 7), Northern Arizona (M: 3), Notre Dame (M: 28, W: 30), Providence (M: 17, W: 1), Syracuse (M: 11, W: NR), Texas (M: 14, W: 29), UCLA (M: 21), Washington (M: NR, W: 4), Wisconsin (M: 20, W: NR) and many others.
In the latest USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona women stayed at No. 3 in the country. Four other Pac-12 schools are ranked in the national poll, Washington is up three spots to No. 4, Oregon is down a spot to No. 6, Stanford slid three positions to No. 11 and Colorado climbed two spots to No. 12. In the west regional poll, the UA women are ranked No. 1 for the second-straight week.
The Wildcat men are No. 12 in the west regional poll. In the national poll, the Pac-12 has five teams among the top 30. Colorado is second, Oregon is fourth, UCLA fell nine spots to 21st, Stanford is 29th after falling six positions and Arizona State slid two spots to 30th.
On the women’s side, the Wildcats will run sophomore Kayla Beattie, junior Stephanie Bulder, sophomore Molly Callahan, junior Nicci Corbin, junior Hanna Peterson, senior Elvin Kibet, freshman Maria Larsson and senior Erin Menefee.
For the men, freshman Matthew Beer, junior Kenji Bierig, sophomore Dylan Hopper, freshman Collins Kibet, sophomore Jonas Legernes, freshman Travis Thorne, junior Lawi Lalang, junior Thomas Valente and junior Braden Timpe will don the red and navy for the Wildcats. Saturday will be Lalang’s first race of the 2013 season. He was the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Champion and he took third place at the 2012 NCAA Championships, the only cross country race he has not taken first place in.
