     Three-time letterman and track captain in 1940, also earning letters as a football haflback in 1936 and 1938. Outstanding sprinter as member of three Border Conference champion track teams. Returned to Arizona in 1951 as head track and field coach and quickly rebuilt the UA program to national prominence, developing 12 All- Americans, three Olympians, three national championshipd and an American record holder and Pan- American Games Gold Medalist. He had a dual meet record of 137-69-1. Served as an assistant coach of the Unite States team for the 1967 Pan- American Games. Established cross country as a varsity program, winning four Western Athletic Conference title contested in 1962 and losing only four dual meets in 14-year period. Served as assistant football coach, handling defensive and scouting duties for 1952-56, and coaching the freshman team 1957-64. Served as President of the U.S. Track Coaches Association and as a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Named executive director of the U.S. Track& Field Federation in 1968, serving until his retirement in December 1978.
