In 1989 he won both the Pac-10 and NCAA 5,000m titles. In 1990 he won Pac-10 and Distirct VIII Cross Country titles and was named Pac-10 Cross Country Athlete of the Year. in 1991, he won the Sunkist indoor two-mile event, and was team co-captain. He was 1992 Pac-10 3,000m and 5,000m champion, NCAA national champion in the 3,000m steeplechase and was second in the 5,000m indoor. He established UA records in the 5,000 (13:32.58), 3,000m steeplechase (7:55.54) and 5,000m indoor (13:45.18). He won the 3,000m steeplechase at the 1993 Goodwill Games. He was a finalist at the 1996 Olympic Games in the 3,000m steeplechase and at the time of his induction, was the U.S. record holder for the outdoor two-mile run.
