Wildcats Wrap Pac-12 Road Play With Win

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona women’s soccer concluded Pac-12 road play with a 3-2 overtime victory over USC Friday night and move to 7-5-3 on the season. The win over the Trojans was the first for the Wildcats since 2004 when UA later went on to win the Pac-10 Conference title.

In the USC match, sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez recorded the first goal for the Cats in the 75th minute followed by a penalty kick goal by Ponce two minutes later to put Arizona up 2-0. The Trojans countered the two goals with eight minutes remaining in the match to send it in to overtime. Five minutes in to the first period of overtime, Ponce fired the game-winning goal off a free kick outside the USC goal.

On the season, Ponce has five game-winning goals and also leads the team in goals with 10 and shots with 62, including 30 on goal. Junior transfer Alexandra Doller ranks second on the team with five goals and 32 shots, including 14 on goal. Freshman Jaden DeGracie leads the team in assists with five and has taken 13 shots with five on goal. Lopez’s goal vs. USC added to her four-goal total for the Wildcats.

Junior goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman has collected a total of 69 saves, recording a .812 save percentage. Kaufman has held four teams scoreless including Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside, No. 24 Ohio State and Oregon State. Back-up goalkeeper Alison Gondosch has played in two matches, recording one save and one goalie assist.

In the Pac-12, Arizona leads the conference in goals with 31 and goals per game averaging two goals a game. In the shots category, the Wildcats are ranked No. 5 with 236. Senior Ponce is ranked No.1 in game-winning goals with five and second in the conference for shots with 62. Ponce is also tied for second place in the goals section with 10. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman leads the Pac-12 in saves with 69.

The Arizona defense has held their 15 opponents scoreless for a total of 1,109 minutes, including four shutouts against non-conference opponents Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside, No. 24 Ohio State and Pac-12 opponent Oregon State. Six matches have been decided by a single goal (Florida Atlantic, No. 11 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford, California, Oregon and USC).

The Wildcats return home to match up with Washington State on Fri., Oct. 25, at 2 p.m., and Washington on Sun., Oct. 27, at noon. Both matches will be played at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. The match vs. Washington State will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
