Only the fourth Director of Athletics in UA history, became known as "the architect of excellence" for overseeing Arizona's rise to the ranks of the nation's elite in overall athletic achievement. Supervised fiscal restructuring and influx of private funds to put department on sound financial footing, as well as capital campaigns that improved and expanded UA facilities enormously. During his tenure UA became a fixture in NCAA post-season play in virtually every sport. Has worked tirelessly for the advancement of intercollegiate athletics, serving on countless NCAA and Pac-10 committees and advisory groups. Chaired Pac-10 Championships Committee (1991-92) and prestigious NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee (1988-89), the latter while undergoing extensive treatment for lymphoma. Served as Vice President of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in 1992-92, then as President. In 1994 began tenure as Executive Director of the NCAA, the highest ranking position in American intercollegiate athletics. Prior to arrival at Arizona he was Director of Athletics at University of the Pacific, San Diego State University and University of Houston. Continues as chair of the Cedric Dempsey Cancer Center Run in Tucson, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the renowned Arizona Cancer Center.
