TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona senior Fredrik Ask moved into the quarterfinals of the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Friday, defeating his first two opponents in the draw.
Ask swept both matches, first defeating Lucas Vaz of Florida Gulf Coast 6-2, 6-4 before topping Franz Sydow of Minnesota 6-2, 6-3.
Fellow senior Kieren Thompson fell in his first match of the day as he was topped in a three-set match by North Florida’s Pablo Tellez, 2-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. Thompson retired in his consolation match against Tianyu Bao of Florida Gulf Coast.
Thompson and Ask also paired up in doubles on the day, first beating Florida Gulf Coast’s Gabriel Echeverry and Christopher Perrigan 8-6, but then fell to Bruno Semenzato and Jason Tahir of Duke 8-4.
Ask will continue on Saturday to face Florent Diep of Florida.
