     A four-time All- American in cross country, the first Arizona athlete to do so in any sport, and three-time All-American in track, he won the 1979 Pacific-10 Conference Steeplechase against some of the best distance runners in the world. He received Arizona's outstanding freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior (tie) athlete award, was a Golden Eagle Scholar and the 1980 Pacific-10 Conference 1500-meters champion. He set Arizona records in the Steeplechase (8:26.26) and 5000 meters (13:44.2). He continued to improve throughout a sterling post-graduate career, setting a United States record in the 10000 meter road race (28.12) and earning spots in the 1983 Pan American Games and the U.S. World Cross Country team.
