Craft and Pickens Win Titles at Wildcat Diving Invite

TUCSON, Ariz. Junior Carter Craft won the 1-meter title and senior Samantha Pickens earned the title in the 3-meter to lead the Wildcats to a clean sweep on day one of the Wildcat Diving Invitational at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Friday.  

Craft took the top spot out of 15 divers in the competition. He was fifth after prelims with 288.45 points but he improved by a wide margin in the final as he recorded 329.65 points to win by almost eight points. It was Craft’s first career diving title. He earned a solid third-place finish in last year’s 1m event at the Wildcat Invite.

Collin Pollard of USC finished second (321.95) and Arizona’s Rafael Quintero came in third (315.95). Quintero actually held the top spot following prelims. Meanwhile, Dominic Ricotta was the third member of the Wildcats to advance to the finals as he finished in fifth with 284.80 points.

Meanwhile, Pickens continued to add to her resume as she took the title in the 3-meter event with a score of 347.80. She finished more than 20 points ahead of En-Tien Huang of Nevada. Pickens led from start to finish as she was well ahead following prelims, beating out 42 other divers in the event.

Pickens was the only Wildcat to advance to the finals but three others earned spots in the consolation finals. Michal Bower, Sally Hackett and Izzy Diamond went 5-6-7 in the consolation final. Bower finished with 267.70 followed by Hackett’s 263.35 and Diamond’s 220.55.

The event will continue at noon tomorrow with the men’s 3-meter and the women’s 1-meter events. In addition, the Arizona women's swim team will be in action against Boise State. Admission is free for the entire weekend.
