TUCSON, Ariz. – Each week, Arizona football head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff select Player of the Week honorees based on performance leading up to and including the game each week. The Wildcats upset then-No. 5 Oregon, 42-16, Saturday at Arizona Stadium. UA sits at 7-4 overall and 4-4 in Pac-12 play.
Offense: B.J. Denker, Senior, Quarterback | Ka’Deem Carey, Junior, Running Back
B.J. Denker was nothing short of efficient on Saturday, completing 19 of his 22 attempted passes (with no interceptions or sacks) for 178 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball 14 times for 102 yards. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry. Denker finished with a pass efficiency rating of 184.33, the second-best single-game performance of his career (214.46 vs. Colorado last season).
Ka’Deem Carey rushed 48 times for 206 yards and four touchdowns in Arizona’s 42-16 win over the Ducks. He broke three Arizona records – carries in a game (48, replacing his own record of 39 from Oct. 19, 2013 vs. Utah), career rushing yards (3,913 yards, replacing Trung Canidate’s record of 3,824 yards set 1996-99) and career total touchdowns (49, replacing Art Luppino’s record of 48 set 1953-56). Carey’s 48 rushes are the most by any FBS player this season, breaking Tyler Gaffney’s (Stanford) total.
Defense: Shaquille Richardson, Senior, Cornerback,
Shaquille Richardson turned in a complete effort with significant contributions to start and finish Saturday’s game vs. Oregon. On the game’s first snap, UO quarterback Marcus Marriota’s pass to Bralon Addison went through the receiver’s hands near the UA sideline, where Richardson leapt to bat the pass inbounds to teammate Scooby Wright, who intercepted the ball and returned it 13 yards to set up the Wildcats’ first touchdown of the game. The interception was the first thrown by Marriota this season and the first in his last 353 pass attempts.
Richardson, who had four tackles for the Wildcat defense, put the finishing touch on the victory with a fourth-quarter interception of his own. The pick was his third of the season and the 10th of his career, which ranks 17th-most for active FBS players.
Special Teams: Tellas Jones, RS Freshman, Safety
A consistent special teams contributor, Tellas Jones collected four tackles against the Ducks. Two of his tackles as a member of the kickoff return team pinned the Ducks inside their own 20-yard line. On the season, he’s collected 13 tackles, including seven solo stops, while playing in 10 of 11 games.
Junior safety Jared Tevis, junior center Steven Gurrola and sophomore offensive lineman Cayman Bundage shared Hard Edge Player of the Week honors. Sophomore offensive lineman Jacob Arzouman was named Student of the Week.
From the scout team, freshman running back Pierre Cormier on offense, freshman free safety David Price on defense and freshman receiver Drake Pierre on special teams were honored for their efforts during the Oregon game preparations.
