Head coach Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team made the most of their time in Alabama by visiting the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute on Friday morning.

“I think anyone that is a part of American history has to understand how things were and how they got started,” Butts said. “It is a great educational tool not only for our players, but our staff also, to be able to get an idea and experience such a huge part of our history.”

The team perused the museum, Kelly Ingram Park and the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church that commemorates education and human rights issues in history.

“It was great to see our history and how much things have changed over the years,” senior Carissa Crutchfield said. “It was a great opportunity for us to see and understand how people sacrificed their lives for the good of the country.”

“I’m glad we did it and that we had the experience,” Butts said. “I know I felt a lot of emotion in the park, the church and the institute itself because of the events that took place there.”
