TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona junior breaststroker Kevin Cordes and sophomore Rafael Quintero have earned Pac-12 honors for the month of November, the league announced on Thursday. Cordes was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month, while Quintero was named Pac-12 Diver of the Month.
Cordes, who earned his fourth Pac-12 monthly award, has swept each of his individually events on the season. In the month of November, Cordes took home three first-place finishes in the 100 breast and three first-place finishes in the 200 breast. In addition, he was also part of two first-place relay teams.
The reigning NCAA and Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year, Cordes is coming off an impressive performance at the Texas Invite this past weekend with first-place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast. In addition, he broke his own American record in the 100 breast with a time of 50.70.
Meanwhile, Quintero has already earned six first-place finishes this season. The reigning Pac-12 Diving Newcomer of the Year earned a pair of victories against both UNLV and USC. His biggest accomplishment so far this season was earning a pair of victories at the highly competitive Wildcat Diving Invite. After placing third in the 1-meter event, Quintero brought home the 3-meter title and the platform title. The platform title marked the second straight season with a victory in that event at the Wildcat Diving Invite.
Cordes has now earned Swimmer of the Month a league-record four times throughout his career at Arizona, receiving the honor twice as a sophomore and once as a freshman. Quintero’s honor is his first-career Diver of the Month accolade. The honors mark UA’s ninth and fourth Swimmer and Diver of the Month all-time, respectively.
Quintero will now prepare for the USA Diving Nationals, which begins next Sunday in Austin, Texas. Meanwhile, Cordes and the rest of the swimmers will be off from competition until Friday, Jan. 24 at Stanford.
