Bob Murray attended Tucson High School, where he lettered in football and baseball. While at The University of Arizona, he was able to play baseball for both J.F. 'Pop' McKale and Frank Sancet. In 1950, Bob was named first team All-America by the American Association of College Baseball Coaches. The award was the very first All-America award given to a UA student-athlete. Bob was also named the Outstanding Amateur Athlete by the knights of Columbus that year and was a finalist in the Phoenix Press Box Association Amateur Athlete of the Year. Professionally, Bob held player contracts with the Los Angeles Angels (1950-53) and the Chicago Cubs (1954). He was named Outstanding Catcher Prospect (Major League), Class A Western League, Des Moines, Iowa in 1953.
