Flowing Wells proudly recognizes Robert Becker as an outstanding teacher. Mr. Becker graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics education from the University of Nebraska, and he currently teaches Engineering, Calculus, Algebra, and Trigonometry at Flowing Wells High School. He organizes his instruction around the essential question of “How can we use mathematics to solve real world problems?” and he engages every student in this challenge. His students can be found working collaboratively, teaching each other, and reflecting on the strengths and drawbacks of their approaches to solving complex problems, with Mr. Becker tirelessly navigating the room to coach and provide feedback. He is masterful at challenging students to think deeply, persist in their efforts, and achieve beyond their preconceived notions.
Mr. Becker’s commitment transcends the regular school day. Students seek his help during, before and after school study table. As the department chair for mathematics, he has led the transition to Arizona’s new College and Career Readiness Standards. He organizes an annual food drive and has coached everything from basketball to chess. He has served as a volunteer teacher for five years, in areas ranging from inner city Chicago, to Nepal, to Sierra Leone. Robert Becker epitomizes excellence in education.
