David Shingler earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona before he began teaching at Empire High School seven years ago. He was quickly identified as a key member of the staff. His ability to draw students into his class discussions with his thought provoking questions and intense passion for the written language quickly earned him the title of a “must-have teacher” by the student body, despite his reputation for being “tough.” His track record for excelling scores on district, state, and national assessments is second to none - though more important than test scores, his students leave him determined to have a positive impact on their community. David’s students are inspired to “exceed themselves every day.”
Mr. Shingler was regularly asked to serve on curriculum, assessment, instructional, and school improvement committees. David was then hired as Empire’s school achievement teacher. He was integral in reshaping Empire’s culture, academic results, and focus on individual achievement. David was largely responsible for designing and implementing Empire’s intervention programs: Reteach, Intersession, and Targeted Tutoring, which are now models that are shared throughout the state as part of Vail’s Beyond Textbooks program. Mr. Shingler has since returned to his teaching position and broadened his reach to Empire’s special education classes, AP, and zero hour reteach classes. He is doing what he does best - inspiring students and changing lives.
David is currently completing his internship at Empire and will earn his Master’s in Education Leadership through NAU this December.
