What: Arizona vs. Texas (swimming & diving)
When: Friday, Jan. 31 – 2 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 1 – 10 a.m.
Where: Hillenbrand Aquatic Center – Tucson, Ariz.
TUCSON, Ariz. – After a trip to the Bay Area over the weekend with competitions at Stanford and Cal, the Arizona swimming and diving teams return home for senior weekend against Texas. The two-day dual meet will begin on Friday at 2 p.m. with day two of competition starting on Saturday at 10 a.m. Admission is free on both days at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
On Saturday, 17 Arizona seniors will be recognized before the meet at approximately 9:40 a.m. From the women’s squad, Ashley Evans, Grace Finnegan, Margo Geer, Alana Pazevic, Eve Sarris and Briana Wilford will compete at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center for the final time. On the men’s team, Jeff Amlee, Matt Barber, Sean Clark, Jon Denton-Schneider, Mitchell Friedemann, Woody Joye, Ellis Miller, Sam Rowan, Michael Sheppard, Giles Smith and Kevin Steel will compete at home for the final time.
The Wildcats were defeated by both Stanford and Cal last weekend in dual meet competition. The women fell to Stanford, 158-137 and to Cal, 190-109. Meanwhile, the men were defeated by Stanford, 185-113 and by Cal, 206-92.
Last weekend, the Wildcats got an impressive performance by freshman newcomer Tjasa Oder. Oder took first-place in the 1000 freestyle against Cal with a time of 9:57.13, out-touching Catherine Breed of Cal by more than 12 seconds, while she won the 400 IM against Stanford as she swam to a time of 4:22.73. Oder also finished second in the 500 free and third in the 1000 free in the meet against the Cardinal.
Sophomore Emma Schoettmer took home top honors against Cal in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.27 and in the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.30.
Kevin Cordes continued his dominance as he remains unbeaten in individual events this season. He won the 100 breast and 200 breast against both Stanford and Cal over the weekend.
In diving, freshman Michal Bower had a strong weekend as she won the 3-meter competition against Cal with a score of 297.30 and the 1-meter event against Stanford with a score of 298.20.
Bonnie Brandon won three individual events in the meet against Stanford as she took top honors in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:47.32. Brandon also won first in the 200 back with a time of 1:57.06 and the 500 freestyle in 4:52.28.
Last season, the Arizona men fell at Texas, 166-125, while the women narrowly fell to the Longhorns, 154-146.
