Wildcats Win a Pair

TUCSON, Ariz.Arizona women’s tennis won their fifth and sixth matches of the season Friday taking down Grand Canyon University, 4-0and the University of Texas El Paso, 5-0.

The Cats solid doubles play continued with another early point in the morning match versus Grand Canyon. The pairs of Akilah James with Lauren Maker and Susan Mc Rann with Kim Stubbe both won their doubles matches to clinch the first point.

In singles play, the girls kept rolling winning three matches to clinch the victory.

Sophomore Inge Hendrikx clinched the second point by winning her match, 6-2, 6-3.

Shortly after Stubbe took down Tatum Prudhomme, 6-2, 6-2.

To wrap up the match, Marker took another singles victory, 6-2, 6-1.

Smyth, Austin and Oldham did not finish.

The second match of the day started off fast with the Cats winning all three perfect in doubles matches against UTEP. All three pairs of Lacey Smyth with Shayne Austin, Akilah James with Lauren Marker and Susan Mc Rann with Kim Stubbe won their respective matches.

Arizona continued to show its force with four more singles victories.

Austin had no trouble with the perfect sweep 6-0, 6-0 taking the second point in the match.

Stubbe then tabbed another victory beating Davina Meza in straight sets.

Marker continued to show her well-rounded abilities by winning a second match in the No. 3 spot clinching the victory for the Cats.

Smyth got a victory to wrap up the dominant day, 6-1. 6-1 over Rebecca Calvillo.

“It was a long day of tennis for the team,” said Head Coach Vicky Maes. “But we performed well all day. Both GCU and UTEP made us work for the points. We are making good improvements in doubles and everyone played smart and patient in singles. I’m happy with our performance and feel good going into tomorrow’s match with Sacramento State”

The Wildcats will be back in action again on Saturday to take on the Hornets from Sacramento State at noon at the Robson Tennis Center.
