Joan McCormick Powell
Outstanding UA volleyball player whose team qualified for the 1971 ALAW national tournament but was prevented from participating by lack of university funding. Named to the Inermountain Conference All Star Team. Selected for Arete Society and Delta Psi Kappa honoraries. Following graduation began stellar high school coaching career in Colorado, having won at time of induction three state, eleven district, and five league titles. Named coach of the year seven times. Selected 1989 Colorado Teacher/Coach of the Year nominee and 1992 Disney Salutes Teacher of the Year national finalist. As a player in the USVBA Senior Division, was named All America 1988 through 1992. Her team won USVBA National Championship in 1988, 1989, and 1991. As a volleyball official, has officiated three NCAA championship finals and the U.S. Olympic Festival and has earned the Big Ten Whistle of Pride award. Received 1989 Women's Sports Foundation Award for her dedication to women's sports.
