LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Arizona men’s golf team finished the first day of the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate in fourth-place with a total of 557 (-3).

The Wildcats ended the first round with a team score of 272 (-8). Arizona was in first place entering the second round, but was out-shot by as little as four for the first place position at the end of the day.

“This morning’s first round was our teams best to date,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “It was a total team effort and throwing out a score of 70 is great sign. I was very proud of the way we bounced back from bogeys, too. We made 21 birdies and shot -8. We have the ability to post an incredibly clean number if we clean up a few areas. How we react to our mistakes is what has given us a chance to win and shows how tough our group is mentally.”

CSU-Fullerton is currently in first place with a team total of 553 (-7). Minnesota and UC-Santa Barbara are tied for the second place position with a score of 556 (-4).

Leading the Wildcats in both rounds were seniors Benson Liu and Erik Oja. In the first round, Liu shot a 66 (-4) while Oja shot a 68 (-2). Oja shot just one more stroke in the second round making his total 137 (-3) and good enough for sixth place. Liu ended the second round with a total of 138 (-2), just one stroke under Oja after a 72 (+2) round.

“Benson and Erik have been rock solid for us and we will look for their leadership on the course tomorrow,” Anderson said. “It is always great when the seniors carry a lot of confidence, do everything right and execute because the rest of the team feed off them.”

Junior Alex McMahon ended the first round with 69 (-1). Ending the first day in 15th place, McMahon had a solid performance with a total of 140 (E) following a second round of 71 (+1).

Sophomore Kolton Lapa concluded behind McMahon in 22nd place with a total of 142 (+2). Lapa shot rounds of 69 (-1) and 73 (+3), respectively.

Just a shot behind Lapa, Brenden Redfern shot a 73 (+3) in the second round after a 70 (E) finish in the first. Redfern earned a total of 143 (+3) for a 26th place tie.

In the individual spot, Christian Colegrove currently sits in 53rd place with a total of 150 (+10). Colegrove shot a 75 (+5) in both rounds.

“Despite round two being a struggle, we know we will have our best ready for tomorrow,” Anderson said. “This group is playing better and better each time and there is no reason to change our plan because of a tough round in the afternoon. We tee it up with a goal to have a chance to win. Tomorrow, we can do just that. Our plan tomorrow is the same and we know we don’t need to adjust to play the competition.”

Live scoring for the third round of the 18th Del Walker Intercollegiate will be available at Final results will also be posted at the end of Tuesday’s final round. For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
