TUCSON, Ariz. – For the fourth time in four days, the Arizona men’s swim team has been a part of a Pac-12 meet record and for the second straight night junior Kevin Cordes was the record setter as he won the 200 breast to close out the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday inside Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Cordes actually set the meet record in the 200 breast on two occasions on Saturday. He broke the previous record this morning with a time of 1:52.37 in prelims. Cordes followed that up with an impressive 1:51.80 to run away in the finals, breaking his own record. Teammate Sam Rowan finished in third with a time of 1:55.30. In addition, Eric Solis and Andrew Sovero went 2-3 in the “B” final of the event.
Ty Fowler opened the night with an eighth-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 15:13.81.
In the second event of the night, senior Ellis Miller earned a seventh-place finish in the 200 back with a time of 1:43.83. A trio of Wildcats advanced to the “B” final of the event as Thane Maudslien was third, Mitchell Friedemann finished sixth and Austin Ringquist placed seventh.
Meanwhile, the Cats closed the night in style with a solid second-place finish in the 400 free relay as Brad Tandy, Stevens, Smith and Friedemann clocked in with a time of 2:52.35 to finish just behind USC (2:51.95).
Arizona finished fourth in the team competition with 596.5 points. Cal won the event with 786 points with Stanford (661) finishing second and USC (621) placing third. Utah (306) was fifth followed by Arizona State (287), UC Santa Barbara (178.5) and Cal Poly (157).
Following the meet, Cordes was named Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet for the second straight season.
The Wildcats will head to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas beginning on March 27.
