TUCSON, Ariz. – Competing in its first road competition of the season, the Arizona sand volleyball team opened play in Hawaii with losses to No. 3 Hawaii and No. 2 USC on Wednesday at Queen’s Beach Sandbox. The losses were the first of the season for the Wildcats as they opened the year with a 5-0 record.
The Wildcats fell to Hawaii 5-0, while falling to USC, 4-1. Arizona fell to 5-2 on the season, while Hawaii improved to 6-1 and USC moved to 5-1 on the young season.
After keeping the lineup the same through the first five matches of the season, the Wildcats made a couple changes thanks to the return of Taylor Arizobal from injury. Arizona dropped all five matches in the contest against No. 3 Hawaii to open the day.
The second match of the day against No. 2 USC was much closer with the bright spot coming at the No. 4 position with Sarah Seiber and Rachel Rhoades taking a tough three-set victory over Eve Ettinger and Bria Russ, 21-12, 13-21, 15-7.
Arizona will have tomorrow off before returning to the courts for the Rainbow Wahine Spring Challenge on Friday and Saturday. The event will include pool play on Friday, followed by a championship, single-elimination bracket on Saturday.
