Wildcats Open Day One of NCAAs in Seventh

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona women’s swim team jumped out to a strong start on day one at the NCAA Championships inside the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center on Thursday.

The Wildcats are seventh place in the team standings with 68 points. Georgia has the lead after the opening day of competition with 189 points followed by Stanford (136) and California (126).

Arizona opened the finals with a solid seventh-place finish in the 200 free relay as Margo Geer, Alana Pazevic, Taylor Schick and Grace Finnegan finished in 1:28.11.

Brandon, who qualified seventh in the prelims of the 500 free, improved her positioning in the finals for a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:36.91.

After posting a personal best time of 21.53 in the prelims of the 50 free to qualify first in the finals, senior Margo Geer was not quite able to defend her national title in the event as she finished third with a time of 21.73. Her prelim time ranks second in school history in the event.

To close out the night, the team of Brandon, Emma Schoettmer, Ashley Evans and Geer finished second in the “B” final of the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:31.24.

The Wildcats continue the NCAA Championships tomorrow with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay.
