TEMPE, Ariz. – The Arizona men’s golf team concluded the first round of the 42nd Annual Thunderbird Invitational at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course (par-71, 7,013 yards) on Friday. The Wildcats ended with a team total of 284 (E), which was good enough for a fifth place tie.

“The team did a very good job staying patient today,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “We did not play our front nine particularly well. Fortunately, no one panicked and we had strong finished on the back nine. Tomorrow, we will look to come out ready to play the front a little better and then roll some positive momentum into the back again.”

Arizona State currently leads the field of 15 after shooting 13-under 271. Iowa sits in second place with a team total of 278 (-6).

Leading the Wildcats was junior Alex McMahon who shot one-under 70 and is tied for 12th place. This is McMahon’s third time beginning a spring tournament at or below par. In both tournaments with a low start, McMahon finished in the top-15.

Both Erik Oja and Kolton Lapa followed directly behind McMahon shooting 71 (E) and both sit in a tie for 22nd place.  Despite a rough start, Benson Liu was able to finish the day shooting 72 (+1) on the day. Although just four scores count towards the team’s total, Brenden Redfern ended the day with a 79 (+8).

Round two will continue on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. MST. Live stats will be available at golfstatresults.com. For continued coverage, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter and Facebook.com/ArizonaWildcatsGolf.
