TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men’s golf team finished competing in the second round of the 42nd Annual Thunderbird Invitational at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course (par-71 7,013 yards) on Saturday. The Cats posted a total team score of 274 (-10), moving them up to fourth place overall for the tournament with a total score of 558 (-10)
“Our team had a goal of getting off to a better start today,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “We had the early pairing, so we knew it would be important to take advantage early. We made the turn under par and we took advantage of three par-5’s on the back. The guys hung tough and we were able to post our best score of the year.”
The host school Arizona State continues to be on top of the leader board. The Sun Devils finished the day with a score of 272 (-12), giving them a total score of 543 (-25).
Junior Alex McMahon had another strong day on the course by carding a 62 (-9), which included eight birdies and one eagle. McMahon moved up ten spots to second place overall for the tournament. He will enter the third round with a total score of 132 (-10).
“I am very happy and proud of Alex,” Anderson said. “He can play with anyone, and posting a score like this is further validation for him. I know he is looking forward to getting out tomorrow to finish off a great event and help the team post the low final round.”

Kolton Lapa finished the day with a second consecutive 71 (E), and sits in a tie for 24th place.
