Tucson, Ariz. - While the Wildcats are moving into the toughest part of their season as Pac-12 play begins, they haven’t forgotten about the rest of the community as they continue their philanthropy efforts.

On Monday, the men’s tennis team hosted a clinic sponsored by the Tucson Community Tennis Program, where they taught the basics of tennis to the fifth graders at Tolson Elementary School.

For many of the children, the event is their first exposure to tennis.

“Our goal is to make tennis a lifetime sport,” said TCTP Executive Director Stacey Pretzel. “We have tennis professionals and volunteers that go to playgrounds and clinics and help the kids learn. At the end, we hold a graduation at Reffkin where they get a racket and a can of balls.”

The clinic has been intertwined with Arizona men’s tennis, becoming an annual hosting for the program.

“We’ve done this every year since I’ve been around,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “The kids love it and the players get a lot out of it. Our objective is to get the kids introduced to tennis and show them that it’s a lot of fun.”

As Arizona moves onto the conference portion of their schedule, the players are able to use the event to refresh, refocus, and prepare for the second-half of the season.

“It’s very gratifying for our guys to see how appreciative the kids are to spend time with Division I student-athletes,” said Berkowitz. “The guys see the smiles on their faces, and it really motivates them to do more and get involved in the community.”
