Cats Drop a Pair of Duels in Phoenix

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona sand volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-2 dual matches against Grand Canyon and Nebraska on Friday in Phoenix. Arizona fell to 5-4 in dual play for the season.

Grand Canyon 3, Arizona 2

After defeating Grand Canyon by a narrow 3-2 score in Tucson back on March 8, the Antelopes held court as at home on Friday with a 3-2 victory over the Wildcats.

Arizona got on the board first after a quick straight set victory at the No. 5 position as Rachel Rhoades and Sarah Seiber defeated Kaitlynn Ausmus and Alex Goodman, 21-9, 21-11.

Grand Canyon took the next two points at the No. 4 and No. 1 positions to take the lead. However, it was short lived as Madi Kingdon and Jane Croson, playing at the No. 2 position today, knocked off Shannon Dugan and Megan Glennie in straight sets, 21-11, 21-16.

The Antelopes clinched the victory at the No. 4 position when Kami Dickerson and Chloe Jenkins edged Penina Snuka and Allie Cook in a tough three-set match, 13-21, 21-17, 15-11.

Nebraska 3, Arizona 2

In the second matchup of the day, Arizona was in a hole early as Nebraska got up 2-0 thanks to wins at the bottom two spots of the lineup.

Once again, Arizona battled back to tie things up. The top of the lineup came through for the Cats as The Witt twins earned a straight set victory over Justine Wong-Orantes and Melanie Keil, 21-15, 21-12.

Kingdon and Croson tied the match up just a short time later with a 21-16, 21-16 victory over Amber Rolfzen and Kira Larson.

For the second straight match, the deciding point game down to the No. 3 position and for the second straight match, the match went to a deciding third set. The Nebraska team of Alexa Ethridge and Cecilia Hall outlasted Lewis/Arizobal, 27-25, 13-21, 22-20.

Following the two dual matches, tournament play in the pairs championship got underway. The Wildcats had three pairs teams earn victories on the evening. Kingdon/Croson remained perfect on the day, while the Witt's and Lewis/Arizobal also picked up wins.
