Cats Scrimmage for Friday Practice
By: Arizona Athletics
Release: April 04, 2014

TUCSON, Ariz. Head coach Rich Rodriguez and the University of Arizona football program continued spring practice on Friday at Arizona Stadium. The 2014 Cats worked out in full pads for two hours with a majority of the time spent scrimmaging. Below is a transcript of Rodriguez’s comments following practice.

On today’s practice

“I thought today was an uneven performance. We weren’t overly physical and had a couple of turnovers. It wasn’t as crisp as the last scrimmage but they’re trying. We have a couple more days to get it fixed.”

On the offensive line

“The veterans know what they’re doing and making some steps. I’m still concerned about our depth and we want to have at least eight guys, five regulars and another center, guard and tackle that we can rotate in there. I’m not sure if we’re at that point now but we may need to have some young guys come in and give us some competition.”

On sophomore receiver Samajie Grant

“He’s a pretty sharp guy and he knows all four receiver positions. We probably will have him play a little bit at tailback in practice, as well. He’s such a competitive guy but he’s like a lot of our guys, we have to remind them of the fundamentals. When things get crazy out there, guys will revert and do some crazy stuff. With Samajie, he’s a really good football player and has a great feel for the game. He’s having a great spring.”

On senior quarterback Jesse Scroggins

“Jesse’s gotten a lot better. He was lost quite a bit his first year like most first-year quarterbacks are but he’s taken it to heart and played really well. Sometimes he will see something and you can see the smoke coming out of his ears. He’s making plays and making great progress this spring.”

On emphasis of last weeks of practice leading up to the scrimmage

“I think you put more emphasis on the scrimmages because they’re going to be live and it’s going to be live next Saturday. Eventually, we need to pair it down and we can’t continue to give that many guys reps. Until they separate themselves, we have no choice.”

On hesitation from Austin Hill

“Austin’s running full speed but I think there’s always that period where you want to get your confidence back. He’s practiced with it full speed and it looks like he’s getting it all back because he made some great plays today.”

On redshirt freshman Anu Solomon during spring

“He’s had a great spring. He’s got himself early in the mix which is what you hope for out of a redshirt. You want him to be competing for the job and sometimes when you’re redshirting like him, you take the year off mentally. We’ve reminded him that that year is over and it’s time to compete now. He’s made great progress and he’s definitely right in the mix for that position.”

On competition of running backs

“Right now, it’s ongoing. Jared Baker is hurt, we have a couple of freshman and Jonathan Haden hasn’t been cleared so it’s a wide open deal. We have enough bodies for that position and Coach (Calvin) Magee has done a great job of getting those guys better. We were so spoiled with what we had in Ka’Deem (Carey) and DJ (Daniel Jenkins) that we have to get these guys to develop.”
