James Kaprielian shined in on the mound for the 22nd-ranked UCLA baseball team, which rapped out 14 hits and shut out Arizona, 8-0, in the opening game of a three-game series Friday evening at Hi Corbett Field. UCLA punished the Wildcats with timely hitting throughout the contest. Despite a 5-for-20 clip batting with runners in scoring position, the Bruins collected nine of their 14 hits and scored five of their eight runs with two outs. Arizona put a runner on base in each of the first eight innings, but never mounted a serious scoring threat. The Wildcats were 1-for-16 batting with runners on base, and stranded eight on the base paths.
Cody Hamlin tossed a complete game five-hitter, and Riley Moore collected a season-high three hits for the University of Arizona baseball team as the Wildcats held on for a 3-2 victory Saturday night at Hi Corbett Field. Arizona’s battery of Hamlin and Moore was the difference throughout. Hamlin’s gem – his second complete game of the season – included just one earned run allowed on five hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out six. Moore provided the offensive punch with a 3-for-3 night as he accounted for all three Arizona runs with two runs batted in and one scored. With Hamlin in control on the mound, Arizona received all the offense it needed in a three-run second inning to erase an early Bruins’ lead. Tyler Krause and Kenny Meimerstorf, neither of whom were in the starting lineup in Friday’s 8-0 loss, delivered back-to-back one-out singles. Then with two outs, Moore ripped a hot-shot on an 0-2 pitch that skipped over first baseman Pat Gallagher and rolled into the right field corner for a two-run double. Zach Gibbons followed with a single to left field to drive home Moore, with what proved to be the winning run.
