NORMAN, Okla. – University of Arizona men’s senior golfer Erik Oja has been selected for the European Palmer Cup team, as announced Thursday morning on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive. The Ryder-Cup style tournament will be held June 26-28 at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England.

“Erik has had an incredible year,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “This is a goal he had set for himself at the beginning of the season. Our team is very proud of him. The opportunity to represent the University of Arizona, college golf and the European Team will be an experience he will never forget. The Palmer Cup is the best of the best and Erik has earned this chance to be a member of this group.”

The two Palmer Cup teams are made up of ten collegiate golfers from the United States and Europe. Six players are selected from the Palmer Cup Ranking while the remaining spots are either committee or coach picks.

Oja was one of the top six to be chosen for Team Europe, which represents seven different countries.

“I’m honored to be selected to be a part of the Palmer Cup,” Oja said. “The event has great history, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to compete with and against the very best amateur players in the world.”

The 53rd nationally ranked Oja has led the Wildcats this season with eight top-10 finishes, three in the top-20, and 19 rounds at or under par. In his collegiate career, Oja has participated in 52 events with a season average of 71.03, which is a career best. Oja is just the fourth Wildcat to make a Palmer Cup team.

“One of my goals leading into my last year of eligibility was to make it to the Palmer Cup,” Oja said. “I thought that would be the perfect way to end my amateur career before entering the professional leagues. The key to get selected for the Palmer Cup, as well as contributing to our team, is to be checked in and ready to go for every event during the entire year. Fortunately, my goal to make it to the Palmer Cup have been in perfect alignment with our team goals.”
