The award, in its inaugural season, will be given to the nation’s top freshman.
The San Diego native leads the Pac-12 and is fourth nationally with a .938 slugging percentage. Her 15 homers rank second (to Chelsea Goodacre) in the Pac-12 and sixth in the country. Mauga is batting .365 with 44 RBI, the second most on the team. In addition to her 15 homers, the freshman has eight doubles and a triple while drawing 26 walks to put up a .508 on-base percentage.
Mauga is one of six Pac-12 players on the list.
On Thurs., May 8, the list will be trimmed down to the top 10 finalists, while the top 3 finalists will be selected and released on Thurs., May 22. The inaugural NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 27 prior to the opening of the annual Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
