Kingdon and Lewis Advance to Finals at Pac-12 Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona juniors Madi Kingdon and Ronni Lewis won three matches to advance to the finals of the pairs tournament at the Pac-12 Invitational at Annenberg Community Beach House on Sunday. 

Kingdon and Lewis opened their run by defeating Jordy Checkal and McKenzie Willey of Arizona State, 21-17, 21-15. Kingdon/Lewis combined for a solid .421 hitting percentage in the match, while Kingdon hit an incredible .630 with 18 kills and just one error. 

The Arizona duo followed the opening round victory by knocking off Debora Araujo and Molly O’Hagan of Bakersfield, 21-18, 21-19. Kingdon/Lewis were even more efficient as they combined to hit .460. 

In the semifinals, Kingdon/Lewis played another flawless match as they defeated Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare of Bakersfield in straight sets, 21-17, 21-17. Kingdon/Lewis were even more efficient as they combined to hit .479 with just four total errors. 

Kingdon and Lewis setted for runner-up honors in the first ever Pac-12 Invitational as they fell to the top-seeded team from USC of Kirby Burnham and Sara Hughes, 21-12, 21-17. Kingdon/Lewis hit a solid .313 but Burnham/Hughes hit an astonishing .512.

Several other Wildcat pairs earned victories on Sunday. Taylor Arizobal and Allie Cook continued to have a strong weekened as they picked up a first round victory over Sara Little and Hazel Perrens of Bakersfield, 21-18, 21-13.

Arizobal/Cook eventually fell in the second round to teammates Madison and McKenna Witt. The Witt twins eventually fell in the quarterfinals to Mariah Alvidrez and Shayna Guitare of Bakersfield in a tough three-set match, 21-16, 22-24, 15-10. 

The Wildcats close out the regular season at home on Saturday as they host No. 1 USC and Boise State. Arizona will face USC at 9 a.m. before taking on Boise State at 1 p.m.
