No. 23 Women's Tennis Begins Pac-12 Tournament

Pac-12 Tournament

Arizona women’s tennis will send all eight players to Ojai, California this week for the Pac-12 Tournament. The singles draw round of 32 will begin Thursday at 8 a.m. PT.

Per the release from the Pac-12 conference, the top-10 schools will have three players represented in the 32-player singles draw. The 16-team doubles draw will consist of one team from each school with five additional teams selected by the Draw Committee.

Territorial Cup Upset

Arizona women’s tennis finished the 2014 regular season with an upset over No. 22 in-state rival Arizona State on senior day with a 4-2 win at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

Doubles Domination

-Arizona is 16-0 when claiming the doubles point to begin the match

-The pairing of seniors Susan Mc Rann and Akilah James lead the doubles teams with an 8-3 record

Individual Highlights

Freshman No. 76 Lauren Marker

-has started her freshman season with a 15-3 singles record playing at the No. 3, 4 and 5 spots
-Win over California's No. 14 Zsofi Susanyi.

-Named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week of March 23

Sophomore Shayne Austin

-has tallied a 11-5 singles record in her sophomore season at the No. 4 and 5 spots

-consistently played doubles at the No. 1 and 2 spots

Junior Laura Oldham
-Started the season on with a 12-5 singles record at the No. 6 spot.

Senior No. 108 Kim Stubbe

-Has played consistently at the No. 2 spot, only falling in five matches to 15 wins in her senior season

-Named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week of March 10

Senior No. 46 Lacey Smyth

-Has consistently played No. 1 for Arizona and has a 13-6 record including two wins over ranked players

Lone Losses

-No. 19 Texas Tech, 6-1

-No. 2 Stanford, 7-0

-No. 13 California, 5-2

-No. 2 UCLA, 7-0

-No. 13 USC, 4-0

Head Coach Vicky Maes

Vicky Maes enters her 13th year as the head women's tennis coach of the Arizona Wildcats. One of the greatest players in Arizona women's tennis history and has been the head coach of the women's tennis team since October 2001. Maes was named to the Pac-10 All-Decade team in 1998, was the 1996 Arizona Women's Sports Foundation College Athlete of the Year, a four-time All-American (1995-98) and the nation's top-ranked player in 1996 and 1997. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and a GTE Academic All-America choice in 1996. In 1998, Maes was a finalist for the NCAA's Great Eight award and won the Ruby Award, which recognizes UA's top female student-athlete in the field of athletics, academics and personal development.
