Mauga One of 10 Finalists for Freshman of the Year

TUCSON Freshman right fielder Katiyana Mauga is one of 10 players to be named a finalist for NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year Award, the NFCA announced Thursday.

The award, in its inaugural season, will be given to the nation’s top freshman.

The San Diego native leads the Pac-12 and is fifth nationally with a .934 slugging percentage. Her 18 homers rank second (to Chelsea Goodacre) in the Pac-12 and seventh in the country. Mauga is batting .385 with 52 RBI, the third most on the team. In addition to her 18 homers, the freshman has 11 doubles and a triple while drawing 28 walks to put up a .506 on-base percentage.

Mauga is one of two Pac-12 players on the list.

The top three finalists will be selected and released on Thurs., May 22. The inaugural NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 27 prior to the opening of the annual Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
