No. 27 Arizona women’s tennis (17-6) fell to No. 37 Florida State (16-12), 4-3, on Friday in the first round of the NCAA Championships.

With the loss, the Wildcats concluded an impressive 17-6 season, including an undefeated record at home.

UA started the match strong, winning the doubles point after senior Kim Stubbe and freshman Lauren Marker won at the No. 2 spot and seniors Akilah James and Susan Mc Rann won at the No. 3 spot.

It marked the first time this season that Arizona did not win the match after winning the doubles point.

“This was a heartbreaking loss for our team,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “We just couldn’t get things going in singles, especially at No. 3 and No. 5. All the credit goes to Florida State for fighting so hard after we took the doubles from them.”

The Seminoles answered quickly in singles play, winning their first three matches and taking a 3-1 lead.

Junior Laura Oldham then defeated Laurence Porry at No. 6 and senior Lacey Smyth defeated No. 120 Kerrie Cartwright at the No. 1 spot. It was Smyth’s sixth win this season over a ranked player this season.

With a 3-3 tie, the match came down to Stubbe’s match versus Daneika Borthwick. After losing the first set 7-5, Stubbe came back and won the second, 6-3. Borthwick took the third set, leading FSU to a 4-3 victory.

“I really didn’t expect to lose four singles today, but it happened,” Maes said. “I’m proud of the progress we made all year and how we carried ourselves through some tough situations. We will rebound from this and get ourselves geared up for next season soon enough.”
