Wildcats Set for NCAA Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. No. 9 University of Arizona Wildcat women’s golf (ranking by golfweek.com) will wrap-up the collegiate season with the NCAA Championships, hosted by University of Tulsa, this week. Held at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., competition will take place Tues.-Fri., May 20-23. Tulsa Country Club is a par 70, 6,194-yard course.

One round of play will be contested each day with 5:30 a.m. MST/PT tee times daily. Practice rounds will be held Sunday and Monday prior to competition. For the opening round of play on Tuesday, Arizona is paired with Texas A&M and Tulane. The trios will tee at 5:30 a.m. MST/PT.

Juniors Manon Gidali and Kendall Prince, sophomore Lindsey Weaver and freshmen Jessica Vasilic and Wanasa Zhou will be competing for the Wildcats this weekend. By Golfweek.com, Weaver is ranked No. 15, Zhou is No. 58 and Prince is No. 100. By golfstat.com, Weaver is ranked No. 19 and Zhou is No. 100.

No. 10 Alabama, No. 11 Arizona, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 25 California, No. 45 Campbell, No. Duke, No. 21 Florida, No. 24 Iowa State, No. 29 Kansas, No. 20 Michigan State, No. 27 Mississippi State, No. 17 N.C. State, No. 15 Northwestern, No. 22 Ohio State, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 12 Stanford, No. 30 Texas A&M, No. 31 Tulane, No. 2 UCLA, No. 1USC, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 18 Virginia and No. 6 Washington, along with six individuals, will play in Tulsa this week. The Wildcats are making their 27th appearance at the NCAA Championships. UA holds two NCAA titles from the 1996 and 2000 seasons. Arizona’s highest finish since the win in 2000 was fifth in 2010. Additionally, the Cats have four individual titles from Susan Slaughter in 1990, Annika Sorenstam in 1991, Marisa Baena in 1996 and Jenna Daniels in 2000.

Two Wildcats picked up league honors to go with a runner-up finish and a Territorial Cup point at the Pac-12 Championships. Weaver was named first-team All-Pac-12 in her first season with the Wildcats. She earned a runner-up finish at the conference tournament. The Wildcats have had a first-team all-league honoree four of the last five seasons. Zhou was named Pac-12 Honorable Mention in her first season with the Wildcats. She earned her fifth top-20 finish with her 20th-place performance at the 2014 Pac-12 Championships.

Last time out, the Wildcats finished seventh at the NCAA Central Regional Championships. Arizona finished with a total of 901 (+37) and daily rounds of 306, 289 and 306. Gidali was UA’s top finisher in a tie for 13th place, her second top-20 placing of the season. She finished with a score of 220 (+4) and daily rounds of 74, 70 and 76.
