TUCSON–FormerUniversity of Arizona golfer Erik Oja has been selected as a team member for the Palmer Cup next weekend in England. Oja becomes the second UA player to be selected to the tournament, following former UA golfer and current assistant coach Chris Nallen who participated in 2003 and 2004.
This will be the 18th-annual competition between American and European college/university players. The tournament switches venues year-to-year between European and American courses. This year, the Cup will take place at Walton Heath Golf Club in Surrey, England, from June 26-28. The players are selected by the two teams based on their nationality and not the location of their university. Oja, a Sandviken, Sweden, native will play as a member of the European team.
Oja led UA with a 71.37 scoring average in 2013-14, posting a team-high 23 rounds at par or better. He recorded eight top-10 finishes as a junior, with his best showing coming at third place at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in February.
Oja was named to the honorable mention All-America team last week, which is the first time since 2009 that a UA player has been selected to the All-America team.
