TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona rising senior Kevin Cordes, current Volunteer Assistant Coach Matt Grevers, Head Coach Rick Demont and alum Nick Thoman will all be part of the U.S. squad for the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia later this month.
Cordes qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships in the 200-meter breaststroke Thursday night at Phillips 66 National Championshps in Irvine, Calif. Cordes swam a nationals record 2:07.86 in preliminaries then came back with 2:09.48 in the final to edge Nicolas Fink by .14 seconds.
Grevers, a six-time Olympic medalist, won the 50 butterfly in 23.50 seconds, qualifying for the 2015 World Championships. He also qualified for the Pan Pac team in the 100 back after taking the gold medal.
Meanwhile, Arizona head coach Rick DeMont was named to the men’s coaching staff for the Pan Pac games as he will serve as assistant coach for the U.S. squad.
Arizona alum and former Olympian Nick Thoman also earned a spot on the U.S. squad for the Pan Pac Championships after his performance in the 100 back.
Several other Wildcats had strong performances in the Phillips 66 National Championships. Recent graduate Margo Geer earned a sixth place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.51. She also finished seventh in the 50 free with a time of 25.06.
Rising junior Emma Schoettmer had a strong fourth place finish in the B final of the 200 breast with a time of 2:28.48. Also, rising junior Bonnie Brandon earned a seventh place finish in the B final of the 200 back with a time of 2:15.59. Brandon also finished sixth of the B final in the 100 back.
Recent graduate Giles Smith earned a strong sixth place finish in the 50 fly with a time of 23.88. Rising sophomore Renny Richmond finished third in the B final of the same event with a time of 24.07. Smith also finished sixth in the 100 fly.
The Wildcats had a strong effort in the 50 breast as Cordes claimed second place with alum Marcus Titus placing fourth. Current Wildcat Andrew Sovero earned a third place finish in the B final.
The Pan Pacific meet is Aug. 21-25 in Gold Coast, Australia.
