TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon has collected two weekly awards after his record-breaking performance on Friday night in the Wildcats’ 58-13 win over UNLV. He completed 25-of-44 passes for 425 yards and four touchdowns. The yardage total set a new freshman record (previously held by Keith Smith – 418 at California in a four overtime game in 1996).The 425 yards also tied Nick Foles’ mark for ninth-most in UA single game history.
Solomon has been named a Manning Award Star of the Week, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Fans can visit the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for Solomon’s performance from this past weekend by ‘liking’ his photo. When voting closes on Friday at 9 a.m. MST, the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Solomon was also named Athlon Sports National Freshman of the Week. He paced Arizona to a school-best 787 yards of total offense – the most of any FBS team on the opening weekend of the college football season. Solomon spread the ball around to nine different receivers in the first half alone, and he had touchdown tosses of 39, 63, 13 and 92 yards. His big-play prowess averaged out to 17.0 yards per completion, a new single-game school record for a quarterback with 20 or more completions.
Additionally, Solomon displayed play-making ability with his feet as he collected 50 rushing yards on eight carries. Altogether, Solomon netted 475 total offense yards to claim the No. 4 spot in UA single-game history. He became the first freshman ever to start a season-opener for the Wildcats, and his four touchdowns were the most for a freshman signal-caller making his debut.
The Wildcats will play their second-straight weeknight contest on Thursday, traveling to San Antonio for a clash with UTSA. The game, set for 5 p.m. MST, will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and carried on the Arizona IMG Sports Network.
