WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Arizona gymnastics freshman Selynna Felix-Terrazas was named Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week for the week of Feb. 24-March 3, the conference announced Tuesday.
“She has grown so much as a gymnast since she has been here,” head coach Bill Ryden said. “We are very proud of what she has done. She’s having a huge impact on the team. This is good for her. She has worked really hard to become as good as she is. She’s definitely one of the better freshman in the conference, no doubt about it. I couldn’t be more proud of her.”
In the eight meets that Arizona has had so far, Felix-Terrazas has earned counting scores in seven of them. Felix-Terrazas has been in the vault, bars and floor lineups for the Wildcats. The freshman has earned 10 scores of 9.700 or above, including six scores over a 9.800.
In the recent meet against No. 8 UCLA, Felix-Terrazas stepped up in the third spot of the lineup and earned a career high score of 9.900. Her score matched that of junior Allie Flores and was the first time in numerous seasons that Arizona saw duplicate 9.900 bar scores.
It is Felix-Terrazas’s first career conference honor and Arizona’s first of the year.
The Wildcats will return to McKale Center on Sunday, March 9 as they take on Pac-12 opponent Oregon State at 12 p.m. MST. The competition will be live on Pac-12 Networks. For continued coverage of Arizona gymnastics, follow @AZGymnastics on Twitter and Facebook.com/ArizonaGymnastics.
