Cats Open 2014 with Stacked Field at NGRC

TUCSON, Ariz. University of Arizona Wildcat women’s golf will open the spring season with the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, hosted by Ohio State. Held at the Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif., competition will take place Sun.-Tues., Feb. 9-11.

One round of play will be contested each day with tee times of 8:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. PT, respectively. The Palos Verdes Golf Club is a par 71, 6,017-yard course.

Juniors Manon Gidali, Kendall Prince and Andrea Vilarasau, sophomore Lindsey Weaver and freshman Jessica Vasilic will be competing for the Wildcats this weekend. Weaver is ranked No. 37 and Prince is ranked No. 94 by Golfweek.com.

No. 13 Arizona, No. 7 Arizona State, Baylor, No. 3 Duke, No. 18 Florida, No. 20 Michigan State, North Carolina, No. 32 Ohio State, No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 9 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Pepperdine, Texas, No. 2 UCLA, No. 1 USC, No. 26 Wake Forest and No. 4 Washington will play in Palos Verdes this weekend. Arizona competed in four tournaments with seven different players. Weaver paced the squad with a 72.75 stroke average and medalist honors at the Windy City Classic. Vilarasau contributed with two top-10 finishes. Five of UA’s seven players shot rounds of 69 or lower during the fall season.

The Wildcats will have a busy slate with the 2014 spring competition schedule. Trips include Palos Verdes, Calif., Tarzana, Calif., Gainesville, Fla., Tempe, Ariz. and Napa, Calif. The championship season begins with the Pac-12 Championships, April 25-27, in Corvallis, Ore., hosted by Oregon State.

UA welcomes back juniors Gidali, Prince and Vilarasau from the 2012-13 squad that finished eighth at the NCAA Championships. Vasilic and Wanasa Zhou joined the team as true freshmen, Shelby Martinek is a junior transfer and Weaver is a sophomore transfer.
