TUCSON – University of Arizona football continued its spring practice season with a workout on Wed., April 10, at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium. In head coach Rich Rodriguez's second spring with the Wildcats, the squad was in full pads for a two-hour practice on Wednesday. Below is a brief transcript of remarks following practice.

Head Coach Rich Rodriguez

On expectations for the spring game:

“I don’t have a lot of expectations from a scoring standpoint. What I want to see is effort and execution. I hope the guys will bring intensity. Today, we had really good intensity defensively but not as much on offense. We told the guys we need to see it from all of them all the time. I think they’ll bring it Saturday because it’ll be a nice day and a nice crowd.”

On Ka’Deem Carey:

“Ka’Deem has worked hard. Coach (Calvin) Magee is demanding and Ka’Deem has a lot to prove but so far he’s shown it. We’ve limited his reps and we’ll limit them Saturday because we know what he can do. He wants to do more and he’s worked really hard.”

On playing time in the scrimmage:

“We’re so low on numbers we have to play more of the upperclassmen than normal just to have a scrimmage. There will be a lot of young guys that get a lot of reps so I’m anxious to see how they execute without the coaches standing right behind them.”

On improving throughout spring:

“We’ve made a lot of strides defensively; where we want to go and how we want to play.”

Senior linebacker Jake Fischer

On the defense:

“We wanted to develop depth and I think we did that. We still have some young guys filling in spots who need to learn what they’re doing. It’s all a process but from beginning to end, we did improve. Once we get the older guys back, we’ll have competition as well as depth.”

On the excitement entering next season:

“You’re always excited going into a year. You have certain aspirations. We want to get to a Rose Bowl or a National Championship and I believe we can do that. It all starts here and guys need to know what they’re doing before we can move on to different things.”

Junior Safety Jared Tevis

On the performance of the younger players:

“We have a couple young guys that are proving themselves, (Anthony) Lopez and (Will) Parks. Everyone is really working and getting better as a whole so it’s exciting. They’re getting more reps with some of us hurt so they’re trying to prove themselves even more.”

On the defense:

“I’ll give it a B+. We’re doing well and we have days with high intensity but we can still get to another level.”
