TUCSON – University of Arizona football held a 90-minute workout Friday night at Phoenix College with the defense winning an approximately 60-play scrimmage. Below is a transcript of quotes from head coach Rich Rodriguez and select players.

Head Coach Rich Rodriguez

On tonight’s scrimmage:

“I saw a few flashes. We should do more like this. More like a game environment for our young guys. There were some good plays for our quarterbacks but there were some nervous plays, too. Hopefully, we’ll get those fixed up before the next scrimmage.”

On comparing tonight’s scrimmage to last Saturday’s:

“I think we were better defensively. We applied more pressure. Offensively, there are some execution things. But, offensively, I was a little disappointed overall. Our tempo wasn’t as good as it can be.”

On tonight’s atmosphere:

“The weather was beautiful. We had a nice crowd. It’s like Friday Night Lights. I’m glad we did it and we’ll keep doing it.”

On the play of B.J. Denker:

“He’s taking charge a bit, being a bit more vocal. He has played better in other scrimmages than he did in this one. He was off a little bit in some respects; some of it wasn’t his fault. He’ll keep working to get better because it’s important to him.”

On the experience gained by younger players with starters out during spring practice:

“What we’re looking for are more guys we can win with on both sides of the ball but especially on defense. We did not play nearly enough guys on either side of the ball last year. Ideally, we’d want to play 21-22 guys. Some of the freshman class, incoming class are going to have to play because of numbers. Some of these guys have five spring practices left to prove we can win with them.”

Senior quarterback B.J. Denker

On tonight’s performance:

“There are a couple throws I’d like to have back. I made the right reads but I need to make sure I deliver the ball. I just have to learn from those, see what I did wrong and get better.”

On the starting quarterback job:

“I don’t want the position given to me and I don’t think it should be. Competition makes you a better player and makes the team better. I’m fine with it being open; I don’t want (Coach Rodriguez) giving me the job. I want to earn it. Anytime I get in the game in practice, I’m going to try to show him that I’m the best man for the job and that he can win with me. That’s how I take every snap.”

On the scrimmage:

“This is awesome. The crowd was huge, especially for it being in the Phoenix area. I haven’t played under the lights in a while. This was really fun, just coming out here and being enthusiastic.”

Senior cornerback Richard Morrison

On playing under the Friday Night Lights:

“It was just like in Texas, it was great. We had a good scrimmage.”

On his interception:

“I looked at Austin’s (Hill) eyes and I saw his eyes get big. From playing wide receiver, I knew that when his eyes got big, that means the ball was coming. So I turned my head, I saw it, went up with him, and I just came down with the ball.”

On his mentality during the transition:

“The more I think, the worse I do, so I just try not to think and let my athleticism do the work.”

Junior receiver Austin Hill

On the team’s energy:

“We just try to come out here and have fun. It’s a lot of hard work playing for Coach Rodriguez. It’s tough but it’s always fun to scrimmage in front of the fans and let everyone enjoy it.”

On the play of B.J. Denker:

“B.J. (Denker) played well today. There are a lot of things we still have to work on, like timing and holding the pocket. I was real proud of him, he played pretty well tonight.”
