TUCSON - University of Arizona football continued its spring practice season with a workout on Wed., March 6, at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium. In head coach Rich Rodriguez's second spring with the Wildcats, the squad dressed in full pads for the first time this spring for a two-hour practice on Wednesday. Below is a brief transcript of defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel's remarks following practice.

On year one compared to year two:

"I think players have a better understanding of what to expect from us. I think we as coaches learned a lot about them. They've been working hard in the offseason. They're stronger and faster and we have to continue to work fundamentals with them. We have a lot of young guys still learning and were still giving a lot of reps to the younger guys. I think we're much more comfortable this spring."

On working through the spring injuries:

"We didn't have a lot of depth last year and our kids had to take a lot of reps. They played a lot of football and they started wearing down in the final six or seven games. But the good thing about that is we were able to get those guys reps. The only way to get better is to get reps, learn from the mistakes, learn from doing it right."

"It doesn't change any from a coaching stand point. We wish we had them to work this spring. Anytime our younger guys can get reps, it's going to help our team down the road."

On the learning curve of the defensive scheme:

"I think we're still learning. Take a guy like Marquis Flowers. He was a safety until about 10 days before the first game when we moved him to linebacker. He goes out and plays a new position to try to help them team."

On the evaluation process:

"We've always used to film. For individuals and team drills. You want the kids to understand why you're asking them to do what you're asking of them."
